Umm.. to the ignorant, Kofi Annan is the current UN Secretary General and will be stepping down come 31st December, later this month. As I read through his speech which he had delivered in Missouri, I feel it is necessary to share some the important points with my fellow Felines, as well as the Feline readers.
He (Harry S Truman) was determined, as he had told the founding conference of the United Nations in San Francisco, to "prevent, if human mind, heart, and hope can prevent it, the repetition of the disaster [meaning the world war] from which the entire world will suffer for years to come".
But how much more true it is in our open world today: a world where deadly weapons can be obtained not only by rogue states but by extremist groups; a world where Sars or avian flu can be carried across oceans, let alone national borders, in a matter of hours; a world where failed states in the heart of Asia or Africa can become havens for terrorists; a world where even the climate is changing in ways that will affect the lives of everyone on the planet.
And I believe we have a responsibility not only to our contemporaries but also to future generations - a responsibility to preserve resources that belong to them as well as to us, and without which none of us can survive.
That means we must do much more, and urgently, to prevent or slow down climate change. Every day that we do nothing, or too little, imposes higher costs on our children and our children's children.
It is not realistic to think that some people can go on deriving great benefits from globalization while billions of their fellow human beings are left in abject poverty, or even thrown into it.
We have to give our fellow citizens, not only within each nation but in the global community, at least a chance to share in our prosperity.
My third lesson is that both security and development ultimately depend on respect for human rights and the rule of law.
Although increasingly interdependent, our world continues to be divided - not only by economic differences, but also by religion and culture.
In short, human rights and the rule of law are vital to global security and prosperity. As Truman said, "We must, once and for all, prove by our acts conclusively that Right Has Might."
As Harry Truman said, "We all have to recognise, no matter how great our strength, that we must deny ourselves the licence to do always as we please."
And today they need to take into account also the views of what, in UN jargon, we call "non-state actors". I mean commercial corporations, charities and pressure groups, labour unions, philanthropic foundations, universities and think tanks - all the myriad forms in which people come together voluntarily to think about, or try to change, the world.
The fact is that states can no longer - if they ever could - confront global challenges alone. Increasingly, we need to enlist the help of these other actors, both in working out global strategies and in putting those strategies into action once agreed.
In fact, it is only through multilateral institutions that states can hold each other to account. And that makes it very important to organize those institutions in a fair and democratic way, giving the poor and the weak some influence over the actions of the rich and the strong.
That applies particularly to the international financial institutions, such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Developing countries should have a stronger voice in these bodies, whose decisions can have almost a life-or-death impact on their fate.
As President Truman said, "The responsibility of the great states is to serve and not dominate the peoples of the world."
Umm...yeah. If you actually read everything I posted above, perhaps you would want to read the full version here.
La di da.
yes, i know my photoshop skills STINK
I've been doing daily reads of international news for awhile now and today's read was somewhat interesting.
First there was a topic on Gender Bias and how in the third world countries where the gender discrimination is greater than other parts of the world. There, children are the ones who suffer because of the ill-educated minds. Click Here for further read.
On a different note, Iran has decided to further investigate the authencity and the credebility of The Holocaust. Apparently, they are not convinced that that many Jews had been killed, and to some extent not convinced that it even took place. Something to that effect la anyway. Go read.
Discovery Channel is also running concurrently while I type and watch tv. Here'e a quick fact, the tsunami that hit Asia and killed thousands a couple of years back.... well, its impact in the sea went around the world three times before it ended. Pretty big shit huh?
One last final worldly update :
There could be yet another military coup takeover... this time in Beirut.Hmm. We'll see what happens eh, there's been just too many for a year. First, Thailand then Fiji... now Lebanon?? I hope not. Beirut Here

"So, what do you want to do with your life?"
You should be a lawyer, a doctor, an accountant, a consultant...
blah, blah, blah.
Everywhere you turn people try to tell you who to be and what to
do with your life. We call that noise. Block it. Shed it.
Leave it for the conformists.
As a generation, we need to get back to focusing on individuality,
self-construction rather than mass production.
Define your own road in life instead of traveling down someone
else's. Listen to yourself.
Your road is the Open Road. Find it.
Find the Open Road
It couldn't have been said any better!
Kitty and I are big on taking on the road less traveled. We are the ones who are sort-of against conformists. Reading that passage was just spot on on how we view life. That being said...
I went on to their website to have a more detailed understanding about what the green campervan is all about. Road Trip Nation touches base with young adults who are either lost, unsure or simply free-spirited (as mentioned by Kitty). It takes on living life the way you want to live it and not by following others.
Just as I suddenly felt like changing my profile on Friendster, Kitty puts up this post, such perfect timing... It reads :
.... i'm against conformity, you think outside the box ; you also live outside the box....
After reading through their website, I started googling for other similiar beliefs/practice/whatever... and I came across this rather interesting group/movement or what-chu-ma-callit.
Rainbow Family is a worldwide thing that promotes Peace and Love. Much like a hippie sort-of practice, only in a bigger and more loving way I suppose. Scratch the thought of promiscuity, happy-herbs and the negative relations as its sole purpose is to gather the people who have the same belief and outlook in life. After reading up on the Rainbow Family, I am glad to know that there's actually organizations and the likes out there on the same beliefs as we do. Pretty interesting yo.
I'm sure everyone is familiar with the old forwarded email entitled Quarter Life Crisis. Hopefully after reading up on Open Road, you guys would know how to take on that so called crisis hey. As for me, my so-called quarter life crisis has been diminished throughout the past one year, before I officially turn 25. I would have to say that this is all thanks to the experiences in situations and people I've encountered. I am grateful for it.
So, all you need to do is figure out what makes you happy. Or like Caltex's tagline "what drives you"
Find your true-calling and serve and/or act it out. Do what your heart desires and start setting your own rules. Stop following the crowd, be a non-conformist. Take some time to discover more about life instead of being led on by the society. If you choose not to be a leader, at least be yourself, not a pathetic follower like the rest of the world. Individuality rocks socks!!
Hey Kit, write a better post. My brain isn't functioning too properly lately, can't write a decent post about this. Heh. You and me share the same ideal...so go and spread the word.
Today, people, Today!!
Be A Non-Conformist!
