GAMARJOBAT!!

no, these are not models for Gatsby's latest ad. *Gatsby's jingle in the background complete with a visual of mohawks clapping* . if u don't recognize these guys, lemme tell ya, they are Ketch! (red mohican) & Hiro-pon (yellow mohican). and they call themselves GAMARJOBAT. just last Sunday i went to watch GAMARJOBAT - A "Shut Up" comedy from Japan, at Actor's Bangsar Studio, together with june, lilian & pj.

it was a brilliant, brilliant, act, i tell u. it was my funniest bone-tickling 80 minutes of Shut Up comedy; or rather, mime. before the show started, as everyone was walking into the hall, settling down, my friends called out to me,"Bee! Look!" pointing upwards where the Lights and Sounds men were getting ready. i saw Hiro-pon puppetting with 2 teddy bears. this may sound a little odd, but it was hilarious just lookin' at his doings then.

when it was time, colourful spotlights danced around the hall; like the ones u can find in pubs. and TA-DAA! two mohicans nicely dressed in suits introduced themselves silently and was constantly pausing halfway through as latecomers entered the hall; they started mocking them, blowing a whistle and showing yellow (and red) cards in the air!! a couple of latecomers were entering so ever slow, Ketch! & Hiro-pon just couldnt stand them and went on to sit on THEIR seats!! the hall roared with laughter

they had quite a number of acts altogether that involved a little bit of "magic", juggling, clown acts, mime and rather dangerous acts; shoving swords into their throats, popping ping pong balls out of the mouth - one after another, and another, and another - it seemed non-stop. they had one act choreographed beautifully, they call it The Boxer. it was so freakingly hilarious that there was not one second without any uproaring guffawings or applause! i thought it was really brilliant because having to do mime individually is freaking hard. and to do it slow-mo?? hahaha.
they're so, so energetic, with so much acts, not many props, silently tickling us with such great entertainment i would highly recommend this to those of u who are in dire need of laughter. it's therapeutic, yo! halfway through working your way into your piles n piles of work sheets, take a break and visualize their silliness will definitely help, especially at about 2pm, when u've just finished your lunch - that's when u feel all shitty & lazy during a normal working day, ya? that's what i think.

anyways, on that day that we went, it was sort of like a bonus for us because there was an additional Q & A session. at the end of the show, Mr Gardner showed up and informed us that there was a bunch of teachers-to-be who attended the show. they were there to sort of interview them among the audience, and so we stayed to listen. it was then that the duo actually spoke. =) they never spoke in any of their show so i consider myself really lucky.

so, how the name GAMARJOBAT came about was when the duo met each other in some place, where the native speak Georgian, Gamarjobat means "Hello", and being Japanese, the duo couldn't speak any Georgian, so to whomever they met, they just greeted them "Gamarjobat!" and gestured with their hands, waving as if to say hello, or good bye, or anything else. that was THE only word they ever said, and people understood them nonetheless because they gestured a lot. (duh) that is when both of them decided to get together from 2 individual performers to becoming a team.

they also explained how they practised mime, who they got inspired from (mr bean, charlie chaplin and a few others) , their brief background of studying mime/ juggling. they've experience of about a decade or so now with shows. they've already choreographed 6 shows altogether and i can't wait to watch the others, that is if Mr Gardner would have them back again in the near future, they said.

with no spoken dialogues, and so seriously funny, it appeals to all walks of life.. go laugh your heads off if given the chance!
