Kinderdijk

On another note, here are the pretty windmills. There are a few places to see windmills in the Netherlands and apparently Kinderdjik is the best spot - it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There are 19 windmills altogether strung out on both sides of canals.

Just a little educational windmill information. A windmill is actually an engine powered by the wind to produce energy, often contained in a large building as in traditional post mills, smock mills and tower mills. The energy windmills produce can be used in many ways, traditionally for grinding grain or spices, pumping water, sawing wood or hammering seeds.

Most of these iconic structures in the Netherlands are actually windpumps, designed to drain the land. They are particularly important as much of the country lies below sea level.

Kinderdijk is in a polder at the confluence of the river Lek and Noord. To drain the polder, this system of 19 windmills was built around 1740! This group of mills is the largest concentration of old windmills in the Netherlands.

Breathtakingly pretty, it is a must visit. I'm sure it is a hell lot better if you know how to ride a bike!

So Garf, have I satiated your hunger for windmills??

wuaa jess.. very picturesque loh..! i especially love the 1std the 3rd last pictures.. the reflection on the lake - it's just so serene.. no disturbance.. BUT THEN, on the other hand, i still do think that i'm too cool for windmills la.. so, to answer u, i only feel Semi-Satiated. nyiahaha.

so, what exactly is a smock mill. here's a li'l info:- The smock mill is a type of windmill that consists of a sloping, horizontally weatherboarded tower, usually with six or eight sides, on top of which is a roof or cap, which can rotate to bring the sails into the wind. This type of windmill got its name from its supposed resemblance to the smock worn by farmers in earlier days.

it is also said that The Netherlands is frequently associated with polders: 'God created the world except for the Netherlands. The Dutch took it from the sea’ hehe

and oh, u see ur 2nd picture right, there's this thingy on the left, it looks like a cross of a rooster & a goat.. quite funky loh..
