we were at China Town - it took us only about 5-10 minutes to walk there from kitty's place. it's this wide avenue with tiny streets. we get to pass by shops with slippery wet floors, stinky smell of seafood, bloodied meat, herbs, roast ducks & chickens etc hanging in restaurants, hair salon (many of them), souvenir shops etc. everything here is really, really, affordable.
some random picture of a random seller taking a break
this is the Columbus Park- an active communal space for old folks to play majong, chinese chess, cards.. mostly old folks.. there are also a few stalls nearby with which we could have our destinies read on our palms.. i got shoo-ed away as i was trying to photograph them.. this old lady was cursing in chinese (which i couldn't comprehend) but judging from her gestures *1 hand covering her eyes, another holding a rolled up magazine hitting the air (towards me)* oh well.. =P i find this whole scene interesting..
we visited the museum of Chinese in the Americas. it's this small, 2nd floor homage to Chinese Americans who grew out of a community based organization found in 1980. there was a display of artifacts found since the Chinese immigrated here -stuffs like coal-filled iron, old banners, shop front signs, old letters, clothes.. and there's this slides presentation of the history too.. charming..
The first Chinese immigrants arrived in 1820 according to U.S. government records. Fewer than 1,000 arrived before the 1848 which drew the first significant number of laborers from China who performed menial work. There were 25,000 immigrants by 1852, and 105,465 by 1880. Most of the early immigrants were young males with low educational levels from the Guang Dong province. i read this one particular heart warming letter written by a wife waiting for her husband's return, longing for his love.. as she was struggling her days through living under the same roof as his brother and the wife..kitty-in china town
garfette in China Town
after the visit to china town, we went back to have our laundry done at the nearby laundromat.. had to put in 7 numbers of Quarters.. and then wait another 40 minutes for it to be done and transfered to the dryer.. and then another 40 minutes.. all of which, i was not there to help coz i was napping.. *evil grin*.. thank u kitty..
the following day, (which is today), the Chimpz arrived. woohoo. in the morning. we went out for brunch -this bacon, egg, cheese sandwich.. walked around SOHO.. saw and walked past rather xpensive shops, u know like, A|X,Paul Frank, Victoria's Secret and the likes.. yaddayadda blablabla.. (i'm not interested in shopping..) =P
for dinner we had Korean Food. not bad. we ordered some Beef thing, some Chicken thing and some Seafood Stew thing.. =) most of the times, i keep telling kitty that i'm hungry i'm hungry i'm hungry.. i get hungry easily here . must be because of all the excessive walking, wey. and it's not normal paced. it's POWER walking man. everybody here is like, sprinting, like rushing somewhere all the time. and kitty is constantly ahead of me. and my legs are hurting. bad shape.
later after dinner, we went to the movies. but separated. Chimpz watched the Matt Damon's movie. what's it called? some Bourne Ultimatum, but the movie shows only on the 11th street, 3rd av or something.. kitty and i caught another movie - it's an indie movie, situated at some indie cinema, which is about 10 blocks or so away from the one Chimpz was at.. we watched Into The Wild (screenplay n directed by Sean Penn) a movie that is based on True Story.. something that is deep & profound kinda thing.. (psssst.. poosy.. u know.. the kitty kinda movie..?) AHAHA.. well yeah..
quite productive days so far.. can't wait for 2moro.. the plan is to walk the Brooklyn Bridge, which is very near the china town.. til then..
as always, we miss you, poos
i love sean penn
